A play about how a love triangle turns into both a comedy and a tragedy.
August Strindberg, his wife Siri von Essen and her lover Marie Karolina Davidova meet at a theatre rehearsal. They are ably seconded by the desperately useful actor, the “sensitive newt” Viggo Schiwe.
Per Olov Enquist is the true heir to August Strindberg, the founder of modern psychological drama. All the characters are based on real people, and the facts of their lives correspond to reality. Yet this is not a lesson in literary history. Enquist does not spare his characters, neither the legend of Strindberg nor the tribades present. And, as is so often the case in Nordic drama, it cuts straight to the heart: cruel, cynical, ridiculous, comic, just like us. A war between men and women, fluid sexuality, the desire to be freed from all bonds, and at the same time the longing for an anchoring order and redemption.
